Please Reflect on These Eight Heroes

Coming up on Monday is Memorial Day when we honor those military heroes who gave their full measure for the United States of America. Today we will highlight eight people, the first soldier, sailor, marine or airman to give their life during each of America’s major wars.

    Revolutionary War

Isaac Davis (April 19, 1775) a gunsmith from Action, Massachusetts, served as a minuteman during the Battle of Concord and was shot through the heart as his company advanced upon the enemy.

    Civil War

Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth (May 24, 1861) a Union officer leading his troops into Alexandria, Virginia to assist in the occupation of the city, the day after the state’s citizens voted to secede from the Union. In the city, while taking down a Confederate flag, he was shot point blank by an innkeeper.

    World War I

Joseph William Guyton (May 24, 1918) was attached to the 32nd Infantry Division in a German-held area of France and served as an automatic gunner, firing off intermittent rounds on a post near the line of resistance. The enemy shot a barrage of machine gun fire into the line where Guyton was struck and killed instantly.

    World War II

Robert M. Losey (April 21, 1940) a captain in the Navy, was serving as an air attache’ in Finland when Germany invaded Oslo. Losey and his chauffeur were assisting in the evacuation of American staff and dependents from the United States Embassy. Losey was killed when a bomb exploded nearby and a fragment pierced his heart.

    Korean War

Kenneth Shadrick (July 5, 1950) was assigned to the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, serving as an ammunition carrier in a bazooka squad sent to stop communist tanks near Sejong, South Korea. As he aimed a rocket at an enemy tank, he stuck his head and shoulders above the gun pit to watch; the tank’s machine gun returned fire, sending one bullet through his right arm, another through his chest, killing him instantly.

    Vietnam War

Richard B. Fitzgibbon, Jr. (June 8, 1956) was a member of Detachment 1, 1173rd Foreign Mission Squadron, United States Air Force. Fitzgibbon was not killed in action, but murdered by a deranged American airman who shot him as he was handing out candy to local orphans in Saigon. He and his son, Richard B. Fitzgibbon, III, are also known as one of three father-son duos killed while serving during the Vietnam War. Acknowledgement of Fitzgibbon’s death as the first casualty of the Vietnam War did not come until 1999.

    Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan

Johnny Michael “Mike” Spann (November 25, 2001) was serving in the CIA’s paramilitary Special Activities Division, having previously served in the Marine Corps as a captain. Spann was dispatched to Afghanistan soon after September 11, 2001, to find Osama bin Laden. Near Mazar-e-Sharif, the CIA was holding al Qaeda fighters in the recently captured fortress of Qala-i-Jangi. Spann was killed while interrogating Taliban fighters, in particular, American Taliban John Walker Lindh. Spann was attacked when the Taliban fighters launched themselves at Spann, who took out seven men with his pistol before being killed. Spann is now memorialized with a star on the CIA Memorial Wall at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

    Operation Iraqi Freedom

Therrell Shane Childers (March 21, 2003) served as a second lieutenant Marine Corps assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division – one of the first cleared units to enter Iraq. After the battalion secured a pumping station at the Rumaila oil fields, 20 miles north of the border with Kuwait, Iraqi soldiers unloaded from a pick-up truck and in a drive-by, Childers was shot once in the stomach. The injury became fatal when his motion to fire at those in the truck lifted his body armor, leaving him exposed.

Each of these stories makes me proud and sad at the same time; proud that each of these heroes were willing to sacrifice themselves for our country; sad their lives were cut short.

Every person reading this post will know of family members, neighbors or others who have chosen to serve the United States of America; please take a moment to reflect and give thanks for these people.

From 1868 to 1970, Memorial Day was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday of May and has become the unofficial start of summer.

Enjoy your Holiday and Thanks for being here.

  • America in Moral Decline

Morality: The quality of being in right or good conduct. Morality: The quality of being in right or good conduct. In the United States and most of Western Civilization, with our Judeo/Christian foundation, living a moral life is closely aligned with the Ten Commandments, given to Moses by God about 3,500 years ago.

    Founding Fathers Huge On Morals

Our Founding Fathers considered morality very important to the welfare and success of our new Republic:

“It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue.” (John Adams, Second President of the United States; Founding Father)

“Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time.” Charles Carroll, Founding Father.)

    Pope Benedict XVI: Absolute Truth

Following is a quote from a speech given by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to the College of Cardinals; at the Vatican Basilica on April 18, 2005 (this was shortly before Cardinal Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI): Cardinal Ratzinger was speaking out on what he considered Western Civilization’s most serious problem: Moral Relativism!

“Today, having a clear faith based on the Creed of the Church is often labeled as fundamentalism. Whereas relativism, that is, letting oneself be “tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine”, seems the only attitude that can cope with modern times. We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires.”

I understand some younger readers (which I will define as being under 75 years of age) might argue that Absolute Truth does not exist; they are mistaken; Absolute Truth is real!

    Morality Under Attack

Some aspects of morality do change over time, like fashion styles, but for the most part, when we talk about morals (which you do not hear much about these days) they remain the same from generation to generation. It is a Natural Law that all organizations are either advancing or declining; standing still is not a viable option. This is true for a family, church, business or even an individual. Our society is in decline. that is, our moral values are in free-fall. I will give some examples:

Consider the Nuclear Family, which I define as one man, one woman, married with children and is under attack today as never before. The three Supreme Court decisions we talked about last week are part of that assault. Families today also have to deal with school boards, government bureaucrats and health care providers who think they know better than the parents, what is best for their children. Too often this interference comes in the form of sexualization of young children. (Author’s Note: I write extensively about this in “The Truth About Natural Laws-How to Find Joy And Peace, Second Edition” which is available to you, Free of Charge, through May 31, 2024-see the offer with coupon code at the end of this Post. Even though The Truth About Natural Laws was published in 2020, ‘The Equality Act’ referenced is still awaiting passage in Congress!)

    LGBT Recruits Children

I find it particularly immoral and offensive for practitioners of the LGBT lifestyles to recruit young children with drag-shows and readings to children in public libraries. Jesus addressed this:

    Matthew 18:6-7

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! (Matthew 18:6-7)

    Marijuana & Morality: Thumps Down!

The sale of marijuana: I know it is legal now, but is legalizing this drug making us a better country? A more moral country? I think not!

    Sports Betting & Morality: No!

Sports betting: I am amazed at the enthusiasm being displayed by professional sports teams, even Major League Baseball, which has always been ‘anti-gambling;’ remember Pete Rose and the 1919 Chicago White Socks? I was very disappointed to see Kurt Warner in a sports-betting commercial, even though his message was to know your limits and do not chase losses – it was still a commercial for gambling! Gambling does not get a lot of press, but as of 2021 Sports Betting amounted to 4.33 billion dollars; I cannot tell the number of gamblers; they do not seem to want to give up that number. They do say ‘the share of Americans ages 21 and up who said they regularly bet on sports increased by 80% in 2021. Suffice to say it is a huge number of people; can you even imagine the harm – the devastation being done to these people and their families?

    Pornography & Morality: No!

Pornography: Staggering numbers (2024)! Just a sample: Porn industry worth $97 billion, $10-$12 billion from USA; in 2018, users collectively watched 5,824,699 hours of porn-that is 5.8 billion hours. What kind of problems/How many problems is this causing? Infidelity, divorce, child abuse, etc. etc.

    Abortion: Devastating!

Abortion: Back in the early ‘70’s most of us could be allowed to have been confused as to when life began; although, if we had really given it serious thought, we would have come up with the right answer; but with the ultrasound machine it has become very clear that life begins at conception. There should not be any abortions! I do not see how any society which kills their children in the womb can be considered ‘moral.’

    Mother Teresa Quotes

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love but to use violence to get what they want.” (Mother Teresa)

“Abortion is profoundly anti-women; three quarters of its victims are women: half the babies and all the Mothers.” (MotherTeresa)

    Truth About Natural Laws

    Morality: Other Issues

Wide open borders: Our government is responsible for securing our borders, but the government’s failure to carry-out their duty impacts each and every one of us!

Violent crimes, rapes, murders, car-jackings, wide-spread looting and shop-lifting.

Declining Church attendance and Marriage rates

I will add a noticeable lack of Kindness & Friendliness to the list; I think these are victims of Covid-19.

To this list add mass shootings, suicides and mental health issues which I mentioned last week as being a direct result of the Supreme Court’s expulsion of God from our schools.

Take Action: Turn Back to God

I am not telling you anything here that you do not already know and probably already worry about; so, what do I recommend? Turn back to God!

“if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

  • We Have Rejected God!

Have You Turned Your Back On God? June 17, 1963 the United States Supreme Court decided 8-1, in Abington School District v. Have You Turned Your Back On God?

June 17, 1963 the United States Supreme Court decided 8-1, in Abington School District v. Schempp, that school-sponsored Bible reading and the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in public schools in the United States is unconstitutional. Yes, God was expelled from our public schools after 187 years of faithful attendance.

    Death-Blow To USA

I believe this decision was the death-blow to the United States of America, as envisioned by our Founding Fathers. Now, sixty-one years later, the rejection of God and His Law makes us almost unrecognizable.

    Prayer Allowed

Most of you probably will not believe that Bible reading and prayer was ever allowed in our schools, but it is true. Before this outrageous decision by the godless Supreme Court, prayer and the reading of Scripture was common, and in most areas required.

    Bible Reading In School

“Let the children… be carefully instructed in the principles and obligations of the Christian religion. This is the most essential part of education. The great enemy of the salvation of man, in my opinion, never invented a more effectual means of extirpating (removing) Christianity from the world than by persuading mankind that it was improper to read the Bible at schools.” (Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Founding Father)

    God’s Expulsion Disastrous

Like death by a thousand cuts, God’s removal from our schools, the public square and our society has had a profound negative effect. If you doubt that statement, please take a look at some televisions shows or movies or the music from the 1960’s and compare it to today’s material.

    Give Thought To God

In 1963 approximately over 90 percent of the population identified as Christian; today, that number is about 60 percent. Church attendance has fallen and many (most?) people do not seem to be concerned about God at all; this will have eternal consequences.

Saltcotes Cemetery Chapel (Crucifix) by David Dixon is licensed under CC-BY-SA 2.0

    Roe v. Wade

The 1963 Supreme Court decision paved the way for Roe v. Wade in 1973; if there is no God, who is to say you should not kill babies?

The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion“. (Mother Teresa)

Mother Teresa had a lot more to say about abortion – go ahead – look up some of her quotes!

    Egregious Same-Sex Marriage Decision

To conclude the trifecta of U. S. Supreme Court decisions that have disrespected God and shown utter disobedience for His Law, let us talk about the Obergefell v. Hodges decision of June 26, 2015, which ruled that same-sex marriage cannot be banned in the United States. This was an egregious decision! Marriage, as instituted by God is between one man and one woman. This decision made immoral sexual activity legal.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.(1 Corn 6:9-11)

Mass Shootings, Suicide & Mental Health

In addition to the Supreme Court decisions we have discussed, the expulsion of God from our schools and public squares have also contributed to:

    1. The increase in Mass Shootings (Prior to 1960 there was one mass shooting and then one more during the sixties. Since the 1963 Supreme Court Decision, mass shootings have increased each subsequent decade.).
    2. Increase in Suicides.
    3. Increase in Mental Health issues.

In future posts we will further discuss some of these issues!

    The Great Physician

All this makes perfectly good sense. When you have a good and loving relationship with God, you have someone to talk to; to bring your problems to and someone to help you and guide you. God is the Great Physician and He is ALWAYS available to listen to anyone who wants to talk to Him.

The Lord’s help is not limited to the above issues. Being Omniscient, Omnipresent and Omnipotent Jesus is always available.

    John Adams Quote

“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.” (John Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Second President of the United States and Founding Father)

Yes – Of Course God Loves You

The answer to that question is a resounding ‘Yes;’ A ‘Shout It From The Rooftops Yes!’

    God Will Always Love Us!

God’s Love for us is continuous and unending. He never gives up on us. Although we turn our backs on Him, disobey His Law and sin as though we are not accountable to God, He will not sever our relationship. He is always ready to forgive us our sins and welcome us back. Look at the Old Testament; it is our story of rebellion against God, He was disappointed and grieved when we sinned, but He has always welcomed us back; when we came to our senses and returned to Him. Just like the story of the prodigal son, God will welcome us home. The single greatest act of love the earth has ever witnessed occurred when God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die on the Cross, paying our penalty for sin, so that we could have the opportunity to live with Him, in Heaven, for all eternity.

    God Loves Unconditionally; ‘Agape’ Love.

The Love of God appears throughout the Bible. The New Testament was written primarily in Greek, the most popular language of the First Century. The English word ‘love’ can be translated into three different Greek words: ‘eros,’ from which we get the word ‘erotic’ and is used to convey sexual love or attraction; this word is not found in the Bible. Second is the word ‘phileo’ and refers to tender affection, toward a friend or family member and is commonly used in Holy Scripture. This is the word for which the City of Philadelphia (the city of brotherly love) is named. The third Greek word is ‘agapao’ or ‘agape’ and is used to denote special, unconditional love, especially of God, as used in the New Testament. Agape love is the way God loves us, each and every one of us; it is unconditional love that is a reflection of the one who is loving, in our context, God, and is not conditioned upon the response of the one being loved. Agape love has nothing to do with whether or not the ‘one being loved’ is deserving! Only God is deserving of our love. This is the love we are commanded to exhibit towards God and our neighbors.

All Of Scripture Is About God’s Love!

The Apostle John wrote: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. (1 John 4:7-12)

    The Most Important Question!

So, that brings us to a second question: Do You Love God?

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15).
