Know & Find God Pt-I

Author’s Note

Author’s Note: This week and next I am presenting to you the 14th Chapter of “The Truth About God: How To Find Joy and Peace.” This is in preparation for discussing with you Biblical Law and Prophesies demonstrating your need for a Savior and God’s Word pointing to Jesus Christ as Lord and your personal Savior.

You Can Get To Know God

You might be thinking that you want to know God better. I cannot make many promises to you, but I can assure you that if you will make a sincere and honest effort to find and get to know God, He will reveal Himself to you and will help you to get on the right path. In Jesus’ Words:

Matthew 7:7-8

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Quiet Time – Pray – Bible

To get to know God, I am going to suggest you incorporate three practices into your life: (1) Spend quiet time with God, (2) Pray and (3) Read the Holy Bible, the inerrant Word of God.

Your Heart’s Content Is Most Important

You can work these behaviors into your life with an attitude of sincere desire to learn the Truth about God. It is not necessary to accomplish these at the same time nor in the order given.  What is in your heart is most important.

Holy Spirit Will Help You Seek After God

I want to give you a word of comfort: If someone had said to me in 1999, after accepting Jesus as my Savior, that I needed to add three new chores to my already crowded schedule, I would have felt extremely overwhelmed at the thought. I am not asking you to spend an hour a day on each of these practices; I am asking you to get in touch with God and listen to your heart. Start small and be comfortable. I used to travel a lot by automobile. I enjoyed listening to music and talk radio; I discovered Christian radio, both musical and talk and I would listen to those while traveling. A good attitude and a sincere effort are the most important tools you will need; The Holy Spirit will help you.

Seek After God

God has a plan for your life. His plan is the best possible path you can follow. You run the risk of missing His plan if you are not listening to Him. It is impossible to over-state the importance of Listening to God. It is in listening when God will talk to you. Sometimes He will talk to you while you are spending time with Him, praying to Him or reading His Holy Word, the Bible; but just as often, in my experience, He will talk to you at other times. As often as not, He speaks to me while I am sleeping or, to be more precise, in that state between sleep and consciousness.

Listen To God

God also often speaks to me with a thought that just pops into my head. I will give you an example: several months ago, on a Sunday, we had intended to go to Church, but the Lord put it in my mind to watch Dr. Charles Stanley on TV. The message Dr. Stanley preached was about Listening to God. It hit me like a ton of bricks that I had not included in “The Truth About God” how important it is to listen to Him; a major oversight on my part, enabling me to make the correction before publication.

God Is In Absolute Control

For years I have struggled with how do I know if God is talking to me or am I just having these random thoughts? The answer to that question is: Trust God! At the end of this paragraph I am going to give you two Scripture verses from Proverbs which are essential. These may not be the most important verses in the Bible, but I can assure you that without following the advice they offer, very little will change in your life. I used to believe in accidents and coincidences. No longer – God is completely in control of everything! This does not mean that I will never again experience an accident; it does mean God has a purpose for allowing that accident.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

Trust God – Trust Jesus – Trust The Holy Spirit

I can give you some guidance regarding Listening to God: He will usually speak quietly, just a vapor of a thought; it will probably be clear and concise; and, most assuredly, will be in alignment with the Word of God – the Bible! You must develop a ‘Listening Heart’—a habit, if you will, of Listening to God. Trust God – Trust Jesus – Trust the Holy Spirit: Watch Him Work!

Spend Time With God

Spend quiet time with God: This is a bit like meditation, except the focus is on God, not you. This takes practice and some days are more productive than others. You want to clear your mind and listen for God to talk to you. Be aware that God may not always talk to you immediately, so just be alert for Him. It is not easy to keep your mind free of distractions and do not forget that Satan does not want you to meditate on God; he will try to distract you. Do not give up. When you get distracted and find yourself not listening for God just stop. Clear your mind and go at it again. I use a Scripture verse to ask for God’s help:

1 Samuel 3:9

“…Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears….” (1 Samuel 3:9)

God Knows You – Be Sincere & Persistent

Sometimes, God talks to me, but usually not. That is ok. The important thing is your attitude. God knows your every thought and He knows what is in your heart. God knows if you are sincerely trying to know Him better; He knows if you are just going through the motions. Be sincere and persistent.

Psalm 19:14

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight,  O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
