Biblical Or Secular Worldview

A Worldview? What does this mean? Do you have a Worldview? What is your Worldview? A Worldview can be defined “as a way of looking at or interpreting the world.” A more complete definition is: “The set of convictions, commitments, beliefs, and fundamental principles one has when one tries to make sense of the world or simply of all things.”

Some questions which will come up when discussing Worldview will be: “Where do we come from and where are we going?”  Also “Why am I here?” and  “What is my purpose?”

Dr. James N. Anderson, associate professor of theology and philosophy at Reformed Theological Seminary and the author of “What’s Your Worldview?” identifies twenty-one possible worldviews. We will discuss a few:

  1. Naturalism/Materialism: Nature/Matter is all there is. Since there are no immaterial realities, it is hard for a naturalist/materialist to truly affirm the existence of mind or God who gives moral commands.
  2. Nihilism: There are no objective moral values.
  3. Relativism: There is no objective truth. Truth is relative to the individual or to the broader culture. The relativist will speak of ‘truth’ for you and ‘truth’ for me.
  4. Christianity: God created our world and universe, including man; man sinned and fell from Grace; God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the Cross, paying the penalty for humanity’s sins, providing a pathway to Redemption.

Naturalism/Materialism, Nihilism and Relativism we will lump under the word ‘Secular’ and Christianity as ‘Biblical.’

From a Christian perspective the Secular Worldview tries to explain the existence of the World and the people who inhabit it as though God does not exist. I know, I know, when a disaster occurs many people will say ‘You are in our prayers’ or ‘I am praying for you.’  The next day, these same people will be talking about evolution, same-sex marriage, abortion or some other topic diametrically opposed to God.

Simply put, the Biblical Worldview explains the World and all its inhabitants from God’s point of view. Fortunately, He has provided us with a textbook; 3,500 years in the making, covering God’s Creation, the first people, their Fall from His Grace and God’s Plan for their Redemption, culminating in His Son, Jesus Christ’s, death on the Cross and His Rising from the dead. The final twenty-two chapters of the Book describes God’s Plan for Jesus’ return.

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants – things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it for the time is near.” (Revelation 1:1-3)

If you search the internet, you will find that only six to nine percent of self-identified Christians possess a Biblical Worldview! It is sad and must break Jesus’ heart. I am ashamed to say that I was well past my fiftieth birthday before I had read even one book of the Bible completely. . I am sorry to say most people do not read the Bible!

This is truly a shame. Almost everything we know about God and Jesus comes from the Bible. The Bible is the best reference we have for individuals and families to learn how to function according to God’s Word. The Book of Proverbs should be taught to every child; it contains encouragements and lessons for families, children, men, women; borrowers, lenders, business people. I have now read the Bible a few times and I can unequivocally recommend it for your spiritual growth; I can do better than that: I do not think you can experience significant spiritual growth without reading the Bible. Pick it up, read it to your children, your family, your co-workers; if you will give the Bible a chance, you will soon wonder how you lived this long without it. And, as a bonus, you will achieve a Biblical Worldview!

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1-3)

If Bible reading would spread all over the country great things could happen: Mass shootings could be thwarted, drug and alcohol abuse decreased, abortions stopped, mental illness alleviated, lying eliminated, gambling lessened and other social ills corrected. Please take another look at the post entitled “We Have Rejected God” dated May 8, 2024. I contend Bible reading and praying being stopped by the Supreme Court in 1963 has resulted in four generations of ignorance about God. My proposed social repair would not happen over-night; permanent fixes seldom are quick.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

I urge you to give the Bible a try!

Thanks for reading.
