Happy Birthday United States of America

As the United States of America celebrates its 248th birthday I say ‘Thank You’ to the Lord and all the people who have contributed to making this country the greatest in the world! God Bless America!

Declaration of Independence

Our Declaration of Independence was adopted by the 13 original colonies on July 4th, 1776 making the United States the oldest democracy in the world. Our Constitution was ratified on June 21, 1788,officially establishing the USA as a constitutional republic and is still our basic governing document.

USA is a Constitutional Republic

In case anyone is wondering, the difference between a ‘democracy’ and a ‘constitutional republic’ can be summed up with this: One fundamental principle of a constitutional republic is the protection of minority rights against the potential tyranny of the maj0ority. I recently heard a commentor describe it like this: ‘A lynch mob is a democracy with one descending voice (the person at the end of the rope.’)

Of the People-By the People-For the People

President Abraham Lincoln, in his November 1863 Gettysburg Address famously stated “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Among other things this means that the people have to be interested in and involved in the government for our Country to be successful! At the very least you must VOTE!

Parades and Family

The 4th of July is a time for parades, BBQ’s and family gatherings. My personal favorites include a patriotic parade and pork steaks on the grill.

Patriotic Movie

I enjoy patriotic movies also, especially ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy,’ a 1942 film starring James Cagney and based on the true-life story of George M. Cohan, known as ‘The Man Who Owned Broadway.’ Give it a try – it has even been remastered in color!
