Atonement Of The Lord

Adam & Eve Ushered Sin Into The World

When Adam and Eve dwelt in the Garden of Eden, they had a pretty sweet deal. They walked, talked and fellowshipped with God. The Bible says that God put the man, Adam, “in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” It sounds to me like ‘tending and keeping’ the Garden was not too arduous. When Eve took a bite of the apple and got Adam to be complicit in her crime, sin entered the world, turning it upside down; a condition which persists to this day.

Sin Offends All Of Creation

Disobeying God or Sin, disrupts all of Creation. You see, human beings are made in the image of God, sinning is just the opposite. I do not think we truly understand how offensive sin is to God; we even label sin as minor (Venial) or major (Mortal); nowhere in the Bible is this distinction made.

Death Is The Penalty For Sin

God says the penalty for sin is death.

Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The Atonement Of The Lord

Jesus Christ atoned for our sins by His death on the Cross and with His Resurrection three days later, provided a path for us to join Him in Heaven. The ramifications of our Lord’s suffering, crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection spans both Testaments satisfying God’s requirements for sinful man to be reconciled to Himself and has developed into a Biblical doctrine known as ‘The Atonement of the Lord,’which has several tentacles:

Penal: The concept of Atonement can only be understood in the context of the wrath of God against sin.

Sacrificial: Starting in Genesis Chapter 4, with Abel’s sacrifice from his flock, the Old Testament Hebrews and Israelites made sacrifices to God to appease, honor and thank Him. The Passover lamb which saved the Hebrews from the angel of death played a significant part in their escape from Egypt. However, the sacrifice of animals was inadequate; human beings had sinned; it would take human blood to quench the wrath of God.

Substitutionary: The penal and sacrificial components make it clear that Jesus’ crucifixion and death was as a substitute – offered in the place of those humans who deserved God’s wrath. Jesus was sinless; He lived a perfect life.

Cosmic: In his letter to the Romans, Paul (St. Paul) reminds the church that because of the Adamic curse (Genesis Chapter 3) “the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now” (Romans 8:22). The curse, which was brought into the cosmos by the sin of humanity, ultimately will be reversed through the atoning work of the Second Adam (Jesus Christ) who accomplishes a cosmic reconciliation through the blood of His cross. Because of the Atonement, the universe awaits a cosmic renovation into a glorious new heaven and a new earth in which all opposition to God is swept away by the triumphant Messiah (2 Peter 3) and (Revelation 21:1 – 22:9). This could happen at any time with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ Paid Our Penalty For Sin

The take-a-way here? Jesus Christ died for your sins and mine and wants each of us (you and I) to join Him in Heaven when we leave this earth. If you are not a Born-Again Christian you will not see Heaven. Please take care of this today. Use the following prayer to ask Jesus into your life:

Sinner’s Prayer Of Salvation

Salvation Prayer

Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. I’m sorry for my sin.

I want to turn from my sin. Please forgive me.

I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son;

I believe He died on the cross for my sins and You raised Him to life.

I want Him to come into my heart and take control of my life.

I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and

follow Him as my Lord from this day forward.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Over the next few posts, we are going to take a look at what God expects from us and how we can be righteous in the eyes of our heavenly Father.

Thanks for reading.
